According to the law, the chief ministers of the four provinces and an equal number of members belonging to the federal government, which will be nominated by the premier, will become members of the council.

As such, PM Shehbaz will serve as the council chairman along with the chief ministers of the four provinces. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Commerce Minister Naveed Qamar and Aviation and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique will serve as the federal government’s representatives on the council.

According to the constitution, the CCI is tasked with creating and regulating policies regarding matters included in the federal legislative list. The council will supervise and exercise control over associated institutions.

“The council shall be created within thirty days of the prime minister taking oath of the office,” it states. It adds that the CCI should hold a meet at least once in 90 days. However, in the event of an emergency, the PM can summon an urgent meeting at the request of the provinces.

The decisions of the council are made based on a majority vote.
