President Tayyip Erdogan is flying to Russia for discussions along with top economic policymakers. Erdogan will meet with Vladimir Putin to talk about Black Sea grain exports.
Erdogan is scheduled to meet with Putin at the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, according to the source, a Turkish official who asked to remain anonymous as per local media.
Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek, and Hafize Gaye Erkan, the governor of the central bank, will attend meetings.
Simsek and Erkan, who were appointed to their positions in June to plan a U-turn to more conventional economic strategies, had not previously made any announcements about their travels. What would be discussed and which officials they would meet were unknown. The central bank chose not to respond.
Erdogan hopes to persuade Putin to renew the agreement on the export of grain from Ukraine when the presidents meet later on Monday.
Turkey, a member of NATO, maintains close connections with both Moscow and Kyiv.
Since the invasion at the beginning of last year, it has promoted economic cooperation with Russia and opposed both the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Western sanctions against Moscow.
