Presser ‘breath of fresh air for democracy’: Bilawal

Sh Rashid says press conference was unnecessary in current scenario

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Thursday welcomed the press conference of Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Babar Iftikhar.

The PPP chairman, in his Tweet, said that the “Press conference of the DG ISPR is a breath of fresh air for democracy. It is a responsibility not only of every institution but every Pakistani to support democracy, constitution and rule of law.”

Bilawal further added that Parliament, Judiciary & establishment transition from controversial to constitutional roles will not be easy. The answer to all of Pakistan’s problems is democracy, democracy and more democracy. If we continue on this path no power on earth can stop Pakistan’s progress.

Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz has said that former prime minister Imran Khan’s “lies” that the United States orchestrated a conspiracy to topple his government have been “ripped apart”.

“You [Imran Khan] played a dangerous game to cling to power. Used sensitive forums like the NSC [National Security Committee] for the conspiracy drama,” she wrote in a Tweet on her official handle on Thursday.

Maryam added that Imran Khan had also approached the establishment to seek an NRO (relief in corruption cases). In another tweet, she said the time has come to hold the former premier accountable for “playing” with the national security of the country for political gains.

Reacting to the ISPR press conference, former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said that when things were getting better, Maj. Gen. Babar Iftikhar has “opened a new chapter”, saying he did not need to do a press conference in the current crisis.

Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry said that the Pakistan Army spokesman had clarified his position, and his position should have been the same. Whereas, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood said that ISPR DG, “in his balanced press conference, had cleared many things”.
