Process of appointment of COAS has started, confirms Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Pakistan Khawaja Asif via Twitter has confirmed that the process of appointment of army chief and joint chiefs of the Army staff committee CJCSC has started.

“The process of appointing officials to Pakistan Army’s highest positions has started today, God willing, the appointments will be made soon as per the constitutional requirements,” the minister said in a tweet.

He also rejected rumors that a summary of the appointment had already been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office.

While talking to the media, Khawaja said that the summary of the appointment of the army chief will come in one or two days along with the dossier.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif further stated that there is no deadlock on the selection of the Army Chief.

He continued by saying that when the summary will be ready there will be a discussion of the names.

Additionally, he guaranteed that the Army Chief’s selection will be finished by November 25.

According to media reports, the COAS would be chosen from the top five or six candidates, including Lt Gens Asim Munir, Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Azhar Abbas, Nauman Mehmood, and Faiz Hamid.

However, the minister said, “At this time, no progress has been made on this case.”

He also revealed that PM Shehbaz who was diagnosed with Covid after coming back from London is fully recovered.

Earlier media reported that PM Shehbaz Sharif received the summary of the appointment of the army chief from the Defense Ministry and called a meeting.
