Protest against water scarcity in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas

Farmers and growers continued their agitation in a number of towns of Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas divisions on Sunday to register their protest against the unavailability of water in their respective canals and waterways.

The farmers and growers came on roads in Hyderabad, Badin, Golarchi, Tando Bago, Malkani Sharif, New Dumbalo, Jamshoro, Rajo Khanani and other towns and staged demonstrations outside the press clubs.

Writers, poets, members of civil society and workers of different political parties also joined the protest camps established by the farmers in many towns to show their solidarity with them.

Talking to the media, the leaders of the protesting farmers alleged that officials of the irrigation department had not been distributing water among the shareholders, adding that they were only interested in diverting the flow of water towards the influential landlords – especially associated with the ruling party in Sindh. They termed it double standards by the high-ups of the Sindh government and urged them to effectively raise their voice, saying “water of Sindh’s share was being stolen by authorities in Punjab”. They warned to continue their protest till they were provided with ample water for the cultivation of the seasonal crops.
