Provincial Energy Minister Imtiaz Shaikh of Sindh has strongly criticized K Electric for intentionally imposing extensive electricity load shedding for up to 18 hours in areas supported by the People’s Party. This deliberate action has caused immense suffering for the people residing there. The minister emphasized that this prolonged load shedding has halted industrial and commercial activities, leading to a rise in unemployment, consequently damaging the overall economy of the country.
Imtiaz Sheikh questioned why K Electric is punishing its customers who consistently pay their bills. He further highlighted that as a private company, K Electric operates under the control of the Federation, Nepra, and Power Division, which allows it to engage in arbitrary actions that have become unbearable for the residents of Karachi. The situation has reached its limits.
To address this issue, the provincial minister extended an invitation to private companies interested in taking over Karachi Electric to approach the provincial and federal governments. Imtiaz Shaikh emphasized that he is continuously liaising with the federal government regarding complaints about the provincial government’s electric providers, HESCO and SEPCO.
It is important to note that K Electric continues to implement both announced and unannounced load shedding in various parts of the city. Citizens have also voiced grievances about excessive billing. However, a spokesperson for K Electric claims that load shedding is being carried out in areas where electricity theft is prevalent, while users in other areas are being informed through messages.
