PTI to ask UN to not appoint IGP Faisal Shahkar as advisor

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to write a letter to the United Nations about the removal of IG Punjab Faisal Shahkar as an adviser.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Babar Awan stated that he is sending a letter on Imran Khan’s orders to the Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations requesting that they should refuse to appoint IG Punjab Faisal Shahkar as their advisor.

Babar Awan argued that this is a poor decision by the UN, asking what advice a person who couldn’t protect his country’s former prime minister would offer the UN.

Prior to this only India has written to the UN to stop Pakistani nationals from getting appointed to top positions.

It should be noted that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed IG Punjab Faisal Shahkar as police advisor for peace operations.

Faisal Shahkar is the first Pakistani to hold this position, according to the Punjab Police website. Previously, people from Western and European nations have been assigned to it.

IG Shahkar is one of the senior officers in the Pakistan Police Service with nearly 30 years of experience in the police and nine years of experience working for the United Nations Headquarters and doing various field responsibilities for the UN.

He has also worked as a team leader for the United Nations Standing Police Capacity from 2020- 2021 and held positions with the UNPD from 2005 to 2008 and from 2011 to 2013.

Additionally, Faisal Shahkar has more than three years of experience working for the UN Mission in Bosnia and Liberia.
