Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Asad Umar announced on Sunday that their party will start its election campaign for the Punjab elections tomorrow despite the lack of clarity surrounding the polls.

“Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s election campaign will formally get under way starting tomorrow. We are prepared, but PDM may not be,” Umar tweeted.

In order to respect merit in granting party tickets, PTI Chairman Imran Khan personally interviewed each party candidate before the PTI selected a list of 297 candidates for the elections earlier this week.

The former premier conducted one-on-one interviews with all contenders from April 6 to April 18 in order to choose nominees after being removed in April of last year by a resolution of no confidence.

However, the distribution of tickets inside the party did not go smoothly as several prominent leaders were passed over.

On Thursday, the PTI established a four-person committee to address concerns over the allocation of tickets, a problem that has long existed inside the party.

Musaddiq Abbasi, Ijaz Chaudhary, Rai Hassan Nawaz, and Aoon Abbas were on the panel; but, in light of the harsh criticism from party members and supporters, Khan is likely to include a few senior members while deciding on appeals involving the allocation of tickets.

It’s interesting that PTI announced the start of their election campaign despite the unpredictability of the results.

In order to hold the polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is awaiting funding from the federal government.
