Punjab interim govt lifts Section 144, LHC told

The advocate general of Punjab notified the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday that the ban on public gatherings enforced in the provincial capital had been lifted.

Section 144 was implemented in the provincial capital by Mohsin Naqvi’s interim administration to prevent any adverse incidents as a result of several public gatherings on International Women’s Day and Pakistan Tehreek-e-election Insaf’s rally.

The PTI has contested the action before the LHC and accused the provincial government of interfering with the poll.

The court was told at the beginning of today’s session by Punjab’s senior legal official that the government has lifted Section 144, which had been enforced owing to security threats.

The petition from PTI leader Hammad Azhar was then dismissed by the LHC.

Earlier, the Police detained a bunch of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers in Lahore for violating Section 144.
