Rain, snow: PDMA issues alert for taking preemptive measures

Heavy fog grips Peshawar city, surroundings; visibility remains very low

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan issued an alert to all the departments concerned for taking preemptive measures to avert snow and rain-related mishaps across the province.

The authority has delivered heavy machinery for clearing the road blockades to ensure smooth traffic flow in snow-hit areas of the province.

The PDMA Balochistan has deployed snow removing machinery and rescue teams at Kan Mehterzai area of District Killa Saifullah, Ziarat, Khojak and Lak Pass areas of districts Chaman and Mastung, respectively, to avoid any emergency.

The departments concerned including Rescue 1122, Health, Revenue, Police, Livestock and others were directed to remain on alert during this period of extreme weather, an official said.

The authority has also advised people, particularly tourists, to avoid unnecessary travel in snowbound and landslide-prone areas during the prevailing weather conditions.

The provincial emergency center at PDMA office Quetta is working round the clock and directed to coordinate with local administration and other departments concerned for timely response, he added.

The authority advised DDMAs to coordinate with concerned departments for arrangement and placement of necessary inventory and other essentials along with the availability of emergency services personnel at vulnerable locations.

Meanwhile, traffic flow remained slow in Peshawar city with heavy fog gripping the entire surroundings and the visibility is very low, an official of the Met Office said.

According to details, the traffic to other districts including Peshawar, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki Marwat is also affected due to heavy fog here on Saturday.

He said that due to heavy fog, the cold has increased and most people were confined to their homes.

However, a new spell of rain was likely to start in most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Saturday, the Official of the Meteorological Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said.

The rain will continue intermittently till Monday said the official while talking to APP here on Saturday. However, he said snowfall is also expected in hilly areas from Saturday and would continue up till Monday.

The Met Office Official also confirmed that heavy fog in Peshawar since early morning with the highway closed at certain points.

He said there was a possibility of rain in Peshawar, Dir, Chitral, Swat and Kohistan and snowfall on the mountains with Abbottabad, Bajaur, Kurram, Charsadda and Kohat likely to receive rain.
