Rain spell likely across Northern Pakistan from July 7 to 10

Islamabad: A fresh weather system is expected to enter the northern parts of Pakistan from July 7, bringing widespread rainfall and thunderstorms to several regions over the following days, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The authority said that the incoming weather system is likely to remain active until July 10, affecting Azad Jammu and Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, and northeastern Punjab. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert as intermittent rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected during the forecast period.

The NDMA further stated that rainfall is also likely in areas located along the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers, where water levels may rise slightly due to increased runoff. Authorities expect a moderate increase in river flows, while inflows into the Tarbela and Mangla dams are also projected to increase during the rainy spell.

Despite the expected rise in water levels, the NDMA has clarified that there is currently no threat of major river flooding. However, officials warned that heavy rainfall in localized areas could lead to rapid increases in water flow in hill torrents, seasonal streams, and small rain-fed channels, posing risks to nearby communities.

Urban areas may also experience challenges as intense downpours could result in waterlogging and flooding in low-lying localities, particularly in cities with inadequate drainage systems. Commuters have been advised to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall.
