Rangers deployed in Lahore and Rawalpindi following Punjab CM’s election

Provincial government requested federal government for deployment to maintain law and order situation

The Interior Ministry has deployed paramilitary rangers in two districts of Punjab on the request of the provincial government.

According to media reports, the provincial government had requested the federal government for deployment of rangers apprehending worsening situation of law and order after the election of the chief minister of Punjab.

Upon the request, 4000 rangers personnel have been deployed in Lahore and Rawalpindi districts by the Interior Ministry.

After receiving the request of the provincial government, it was forwarded to the federal cabinet for approval.

The deployment has been made as a result of Punjab chief minister’s election in which Hamza Shehbaz was re-elected after deputy speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Dost Mazari, had rejected the votes of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) lawmakers in light of party chief Chaudhry Shujaat’s letter.

Earlier on Friday night, PTI workers responding to the calls of Imran Khan gathered in different cities to protest the ruling of deputy speaker that handed the seat of the CM Punjab to Hamza Shehbaz in a run-off vote.

A heavy contingent of police was deployed to diffuse the situation and maintain law and order. The provincial government had requested the federal government for deployment of rangers in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan to maintain law and order situation in the wake of current political situation.
