The Lahore High Court has issued a notice to the federal government and the Election Commission of Pakistan on a petition seeking the right to vote for overseas Pakistanis.
Justice Shujaat Ali Khan has heard the petition filed by local citizen Muneer Ahmed.
Advocate Azhar Siddique appeared before the court on behalf of the petitioner and argued that the Supreme Court had clearly directed the ECP for the right to vote to expats. He argued that the ECP had not taken these orders of the top court seriously as no practical steps had been taken in this regard.
The counsel asked the court to direct the ECP to ensure the right to vote for overseas Pakistanis.
After hearing initial arguments of the petitioner’s counsel, Justice Khan has sought reply from the federal government and the ECP and adjourned the hearing till June 14.
