Increase of Rs6.10 per unit likely in electricity tariff

Most expensive electricity being produced from high-speed diesel

Electricity rates are likely to be increased by Rs6.10 per unit after a request by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has been made to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

NEPRA would entertain the request to approve an increase of Rs6.10 per unit in electricity prices on account of Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for January 2022.

The reference fuel cost in January, as per the CPPA, was about Rs6.51 per unit.

The request would be for all consumer categories of distribution companies, except for lifeline and K-Electric consumers and if approved it has been expected that it would have an impact of around Rs60 billion, including general sales tax (GST).

Electricity produced from high-speed diesel was the costliest. The application furthered that electricity produced using diesel costs Rs25.98 paisa per unit whereas the cost for coal based power generation was Rs14.10 per unit.

A total of 8,420.73 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity, costing Rs107.2 billion was generated during January, the petition said.
