Rule of law in Pakistan is under serious threat, says UN High Commissioner

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Friday said that the current situation in Pakistan is a matter of grave concern, the rule of law in Pakistan is under serious threat.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said reports of an increase in violence and mass arrests in Pakistan were “disturbing”.

“The Pakistani government’s intention to use military courts to prosecute civilians is worrisome, a serious violation of the obligations of international human rights law,” he said.

Volker Turk further added that former Prime Minister Imran Khan claimed that Pakistan had been pushed into complete lawlessness.

He said that the only way to a safe and prosperous Pakistan would be smooth with respect for human rights, the democratic process, rule of law.
