Russia warns of rising militancy in Afghanistan

Alexander Bortnikov, the head of Russia’s intelligence agency, said that ISIS-Khorasan is actively recruiting individuals from Central Asian states. He warned that the group is expanding its network and preparing covert operations across the region.

He stated that citizens from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan are being targeted for recruitment. He also noted that Russian labor migrants are among those being drawn into extremist networks linked to ISIS-K.

According to Russian reports, authorities in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have already arrested several individuals linked to ISIS. These arrests highlight what officials describe as the group’s growing presence and operational activity in Central Asia.

Bortnikov emphasized that regional cooperation is necessary to maintain stability in Afghanistan. He also said that peace between Afghanistan and Pakistan is crucial for broader regional security and long-term stability.

The Russian Security Council secretary further warned that more than 20 militant groups are currently active inside Afghanistan. He said these groups pose a significant threat to peace and security across the wider region.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has repeatedly expressed concerns over cross-border terrorism. It has stated that militant groups continue to operate from Afghan territory, describing Afghanistan as a safe haven for extremist organizations.

Security officials from the region continue to call for coordinated efforts to address the growing threat of militancy and prevent further destabilization.
