Russian embassy in Kabul hit by suicide blast

A suicide blast near the Russian Embassy in Kabul led to the deaths of two and injuries to 11 people.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that two of its embassy staff were killed in the blast while there were also casualties among civilians.

According to Reuters, two people were killed and 11 were injured after the suicide bomber had detonated after being shot at by the embassy [Taliban] guards.

According to police, the suicide bomber had detonated explosives near the entrance of Russian embassy. The police has said that the suicide attacker was recognized and shot before reaching the gate of the embassy by the Taliban guards.

The Russian ministry has said in a statement, “On September 5, at 10:50am Kabul time, in the immediate vicinity of the entrance to the consular section of the Russian Embassy in Kabul, an unknown militant set off an explosive device. As a result of the attack, two employees of the diplomatic mission were killed, and there are also victims among Afghan citizens.”

It has also said that the embassy was in contact with Afghan security agencies.

RIA Novosti, Russia’s state owned news agency, had earlier reported about the death of a diplomat and that a security guard was reported injured. The agency also cited local reports saying that 15 or 20 people had been killed.
