The Supreme Court has acquitted Shahrukh Jatoi and his alleged cohorts in Shahzeb Khan’s murder case.

On Tuesday, Justice Ijazul Ahsan presided over a three-judge panel that heard the case.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) announced for Jatoi and his accomplice Siraj Ali Talpur the death penalty for the murder of Shahzeb Khan in 2012 as a result of a minor disagreement.

Sajjad Ali Talpur, Siraj’s younger brother, and Ghulam Murtaza Lashari, a domestic servant, both received life sentences.

However, a formal pardon for the defendants was issued by Shahzeb’s parents a few months after the verdict and was accepted by the Sindh High Court (SHC).

The inclusion of terrorist charges in the case had allowed the death penalty to remain in effect despite the pardon, but the SHC later decided to remove the charges and order a new trial.

Later, the SHC modified the death sentence to life in prison while reviewing appeals against the verdict.

Shahrukh Jatoi’s attorney Latif Khosa said in his arguments that both parties had already reached an agreement, the accused had no intention of spreading terror, and the incident of murder was portrayed as terrorism.

Shahzeb, a 20-year-old boy, was killed in the Defense area of Karachi on his way home from his sister’s wedding in the surroundings of Derakhshan police station on December 25, 2012.
