SC being defamed through audio tapes, CJP vows to protect judiciary

Election Commission has powers under constitution, if there is malice in transparent elections it will intervene

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial has said that the Supreme Court is a constitutional body which is being defamed through audio tapes.

The CJP Bandial vowing to protect the judiciary remarked, “Constitutional institutions have been protected in their decisions, the judiciary is also being attacked.”

During the hearing in the former CCPO Lahore Ghulam Mehmood Dogar transfer case, the Chief Justice remarked that the court will protect the constitutional institution with patience, and forbearance.

The Chief Justice remarked that the Election Commission has powers under the constitution but if there is malice in transparent elections then it will intervene.

He said that the Election Commission was also a constitutional body and that will be protected. He asserted that the democratic process should be transparent.

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial further remarked that sometimes the words of the Supreme Court are misunderstood; we did not say that only one honest Prime Minister came in history, but the statement was misunderstood by the Parliament.

Advocate Abid Zubairi told the court that he had filed an appeal against the decision of Ghulam Mehmood Dogar. He informed the court that he had withdrawn the appeal against the transfer. Upon which the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal against the transfer of Ghulam Mehmood Dogar on the grounds of withdrawal.

The Chief Justice further said that after the approval of changes in the bureaucracy by the Election Commission the matter had become ineffective anyway. He said that all political parties should get equal opportunity in the elections and if there is malice in the transparent elections, we will intervene.

He said that the Election Commission should not give open power to the caretaker government to transfer.
