Senator Azam Swati files petition for post-arrest bail

Senator Azam Swati filed a petition asking for post-arrest bail after a judicial magistrate ordered to send the senator of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to Adiala Jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

On Monday, Azam Swati filed a petition as he faced a case of a contentious tweet directed at the highest levels of the military hierarchy.

The PTI opposition interfered with upper house proceedings by calling for Swati’s release. Minutes after the session began, the house chairman was compelled to adjourn due to the PTI senators’ persistent objection.

The Senate Standing Committee on Interior slammed the detention of Swati. It voiced worry over the lack of a production order for the lawmaker and the ongoing disrespect for the house’s sanctity.

The committee suggested calling the head of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to the following meeting and asking for a report on the senator’s arrest.

The FIA brought Swati before Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Shabbir after his one-day physical remand was over.

The investigative agency requested an additional three-day physical detention of him on the justification that Swati had not yet turned over his Twitter account.

However, the defence attorney contended that there was nothing remaining to be taken into custody because the police had already removed roughly 40 items from Swati’s home.

The magistrate turned down the request and sent Swati to Adiala Jail on judicial remand. The PTI leader filed an application with the FIA’s Special Court asking to be released as a result of the court order.

The hearing was postponed until October 19 after the court sent a notice to the FIA.
