Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy bags another award, this time from a British organization

Oscar award recipient gets awarded by 'The People's Portfolio' for her contributions as a film-maker to human rights causes

Two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy receives another feather for her cap, this time an award from the British human rights organization, The People’s Portfolio.

According to the team, Chinoy is the right person for the award for “inspiring leadership, (and showing) great courage and compassion for fellow human beings” through her documentaries which strive to bring social issues to the limelight for the concerned people to see and bring about a solution.

The People’s Portfolio was founded by Platon, a much-appreciated British portrait and documentary photographer. The organization aims at creating a visual language which cuts across boundaries, spreads dignity, fights differences and motivates the public to support human rights across the globe.

It is every year that this organization hosts a fundraiser to assist with their projects in the pipeline. The event’s highlight is always a human-rights defender who has exhibited extraordinary leadership. This year’s award, thus, has been awarded to Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy in honour of her creative efforts as a director with special focus on women rights.

People who have been earlier rewarded with this award include Nobel Peace Laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege and Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary Smithsonian Institution.
