Shehbaz, Bilawal woo Tareen to muster support against govt

Estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen met with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Lahore, media reports quoted sources as saying on Saturday.

Media reports have stated that the meeting took place a few days ago in Lahore.

Sources within PPP revealed to media that the proposed no-trust move came under discussion during the meeting. They also said that the PTI leader asked for a week’s time to make the decision.

Earlier, it emerged that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif Tareen had held a “secret” meeting with Tareen.

According to sources, the meeting between both the leaders was held at a common friend’s residence in which the opposition leader, Shehbaz Sharif, sought support of Tareen, who has a group of over two dozen MNAs and MPAs in National Assembly and Punjab Assembly, respectively.

It was decided that the minutes of the meeting would not be shared with the media officially and the Tareen group would support the no-confidence motion secretly. According to sources, the Tareen group may opt to remain absent from the National Assembly on the day when voting will be held on the no-confidence motion.

Tareen Group consists of over two dozen parliamentarians hailing from South Punjab and the group has held two back-to-back huddles in Lahore to discuss its strategy in the wake of current political scenario. Although, the Tareen group hasn’t shared its plan publicly, but they have made it clear that they will hold political meetings with every party.

There were earlier reports that there are back-door contacts between Tareen and the PML-N. Tareen had surprised many people when he appeared in the marriage ceremony of the daughter of PML-N stalwart Khawaja Saad Rafique where the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, Hamza Shehbaz, was also present. He then told the media that he had many old friends within the PML-N and, therefore, he attended the marriage.
