Shehbaz calls Murree tragedy ‘deliberate killing of civilians’

Opposition leader questions relief efforts, wonders why no proactive measures were taken

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) President and National Assembly Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif has said that the death of dozens of tourists in Murree was caused by incompetence of the rulers.

Sharif in an official statement released by PML-N on Saturday expressed sorrow over the deaths in stranded vehicles in Murree and Galiyat. He lashed out against the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government, saying the deaths of citizens in traffic jams in Murree and Galiyat resulted from “administrative incompetence and criminal negligence”.

Questioning the relief efforts by the government, Sharif asked, “If the government is not capable of managing even a traffic situation, what right does it have to stay in power and why?” He further asked that “if tourists were going in such large numbers, why were advance arrangements not made? Was the administration asleep?”

Sharif also expressed agitation and wondered how a government that couldn’t protect citizens from a traffic crisis would save people from inflation and other critical issues faced by the country.

Sharif said Prime Minister Imran Khan had no “moral courage” and opined that the ministers and those working under them who were accountable for the “criminal negligence” should be let go from their roles. The opposition leader went on to equate the government’s mishandling of the crisis to a “heinous sin”.

The PML-N leader extended his condolences to the aggrieved families and prayed for their patience to cope with their losses.
