Sheikh Rashid hints at possibility of early elections

Interior minister claims that ‘nobody is going anywhere’

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Thursday said that early elections could be called in the country, cautioning members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party that “switching sides won’t do them any good”.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, he said that those changing parties would not be respected. He added the country would get “good news” from this point onwards.

Rashid advised opposition leaders in the opposition camp to stay firm with their decision as “it is their moral, constitutional and Islamic responsibility”.

The interior minister confidently reiterated that “nobody is going anywhere”, adding that he had met Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar who he said was firmly standing with Imran Khan. The removal of the current Punjab chief minister from his seat is one of the key requirements set forth by the group of dissenting government lawmakers led by Jahangir Tareen.

Senior leader of the party, Aleem Khan, also announced that he was joining the Tareen group. He had slammed the central government and the Usman Buzdar-led Punjab government for “completely failing to fulfill its mandate and bring about the promised change”.
