Sindh CM, political leaders urge calm amid rising ‘ethnic tensions’ in province

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and other political leaders have urged calm in light of the murder of 35-year-old Bilal Kaka in a hotel in Hyderabad a few days ago and the subsequent incidents of violence that have occurred in various areas of Sindh.

The call comes as leaders from all political parties unanimously appealed for calm and urged people not to allow troublemakers to upset the social tranquilly of the province.

The calls came as many violent occurrences were recorded in the region on Thursday, as Pashtun-owned businesses and hotels were purportedly attacked and forcibly shut down by Sindhi nationalists.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, during an event in Hyderabad, said a man was murdered in a fight with restaurant personnel, on which the law has run its course.

The chief minister said, “We Syed’s are also immigrants who came to this land from afar and are now its ministers and chief ministers.”

He added, “Responsibility of the occurrence cannot be placed on a single group as a whole.

In order to prevent the law and order situation, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon called Qaumi Awami Tehreek (QAT) President Ayaz Latif Palijo and Awami National Party Sindh President Shahi Syed, and asked them to play a positive role to stop the deterioration of the situation any further.

ANP Hyderabad President Javed Khan, Central Vice President Anwar Zaib Khan, District General Secretary Mohammad Amin, and Kamal Khan all expressed sorrow at Kaka’s passing during a separate news conference. They requested an open investigation and extended compassion to the grieving family members.

They said that the homicide has been misrepresented as an instance of interethnic conflict and that social media has exaggerated the problem.

MQM-Pakistan also showed concerns over the harsh law and order situation in the province.

The assassination of a man, according to the coordination committee of the MQM-P, has been exploited to sow discord and put two ethnic groups against one another.

The statement said that all ethnic groups ought to be allowed to conduct business freely around the nation while also denouncing violence.

Many hotels and shops owned by Pashtuns were brutally attacked and shut down in cities of Dadu, Sehwan, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Kotri and Jamshoro.

Sindh Police have issued a warning to the public not to retaliate after hearing rumors on social media that were exaggerated about killings, kidnappings, and abuse occurring during a riot on Super Highway in the Sohrab Goth region.

More than twenty miscreants have been taken into custody for inciting trouble on the Karachi Super Highway.

According to a statement released by the Karachi police spokesman, the Super Highway near Sohrab Goth was shut down by a group of miscreants and criminal elements about 3:00pm on Thursday.

As soon as the information was received, a police detachment was sent to the area, where the situation was brought under control and the flow of traffic was resumed.
