Sometimes no change is a better change

Sunday is going to be a big day for Pakistan’s politics. No, it is going to be a big day for Punjab’s development. Bye-elections for 20 seats of the Punjab Assembly will decide the future chief executive of Punjab for the remaining term of the assembly. For now, Hamza Shehbaz is the chief minister, but after the by-elections, another round of voting for the chief minister will be held. The contest will be held between Hamza Shehbaz and former chief minister Parvez Elahi. Hamza Shehbaz is supported by the PML-N, Pakistan People’s Party, and some independent candidates. On the other hand, Parvez Elahi enjoys the support of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and his own Pakistan Muslim League-Q.
The election is not just for the post of the chief executive but for the development and stability of Punjab and Pakistan. For the past three and a half years, Pakistan’s biggest province has been in visible turmoil because of a missing strong leadership. Much has been said about the government style of Hamza Shehbaz’s predecessor Sardar Usman Buzdar. Though one may not be able to find strong violations of governance rules in the government of Usman Buzdar, it seemed the province lacked development directions and administrative strategies. As soon as Hamza Shehbaz took over, stability returned to the province. After July 17, the same government must continue for several reasons. Consider. The Hamza Shehbaz government has introduced a solid and stable bureaucratic setup. Now, there are no news stories of late-night transfer, posting and other reshuffle developments, which were frequent and common things in the previous rule. The previous government changed chief secretaries and inspector general of police so frequently, that the people lost count. Under the short-term chief secretaries and inspector general of police, other administrative posts saw new faces every other month, if not weeks. This created a disorder-like situation.

The Hamza Shehbaz government has announced a balanced budget. South Punjab has got enhanced allocations, which is a welcome step. The recent announcement of free electricity for the lifeline consumers is a historic step.

The Hamza Shehbaz government has not undone the good step launched by the previous government. Unlike the previous government, which stopped laptop distribution and scholarships for students, the Hamza Shehbaz government kept on projects like the Sehat card and mega projects of the previous government? This is a good example set by the incumbent government and other governments must follow the tradition.

The day will bring lots of intense work for the government to hold free and fair elections. Since south Punjab is holding elections for eight seats, special arrangements have been made for the peaceful conduct of the polls.

For this purpose, the army and rangers will be deployed to sensitive polling stations in Multan and other districts of south Punjab in by-elections. Additional Inspector General of Police South Punjab Dr Ehsan Sadiq said that a control room under the supervision of AIG Operations has been established in the South Punjab Police Office for the peaceful conduct of by-elections in South Punjab. They will carry out and important information from all the constituencies of South Punjab will be conveyed to the senior officers through the control room.

A complete security plan has also been prepared in eight constituencies of South Punjab with 11867 police officers and employees along with Rangers and Pak Army officers and men will also be deployed, ladies staff duties have also been assigned for ladies polling stations and reserve teams will also be ready and alert all the time for the by-election process to deal with unexpected situations. A complete strategy has been formulated to make the process of by-elections successful in a peaceful manner.

All possible measures have been taken for the peaceful conduct of the election in Punjab. Additional personnel have been deployed at some sensitive polling stations where there is a threat of disturbance of peace and Punjab Police. Rangers and Pak Army jawans will also perform duty. Expressing his views, the Additional IG said that a clean, transparent, peaceful environment, the enforcement of the law has been ensured in every way, and strict legal action will be taken against the elements that cause chaos, disorder and incitement under Section 144. Shooting and display of weapons are strictly prohibited. Hopefully, the polling will be peaceful and Punjab will remain in safe hands.
