Spirit of Eidul Azha

Eidul Azha celebrates the spirit of sacrifice. Every year people buy goats, sheep, cattle and camels to sacrifice in the name of God and distribute it among the family and the poor. The celebration is an ode to Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim’s willfulness to sacrifice his son in the name of God. The basic idea that this Eid brings with it is the spirit of sacrifice and brotherhood. While sacrifice is good for one’s soul, the brotherhood aspect allows for the betterment of people as meat is distributed among relatives and the poor and destitute.

This time around Eid has come about at a time when the economic situation of the country is in shambles. People are becoming poorer by the day as inflation levels are skyrocketing. Petrol prices have led to an increase in the prices of almost all commodities due to the increased transportation costs. Transport costs in themselves have also increased to unprecedented levels. People who travel for work have to put aside a greater amount of money for petrol and with an increase in commodity prices, they are able to afford less and less while earning the same amount of income. Those who were able to afford some luxuries are now having difficulty making ends meet. While those who were already having difficulty in making ends meet are now cutting back on even buying necessary items as there is a severe lack of funds.

When a holiday like Eid arrives people are excited and have been advised to wear new clothes and celebrate in every way possible. However, in the current economic situation, most of the people in Pakistan will not be able to afford new clothes and celebrate in a way which they could have in the previous year. The economic situation has made it very difficult for people to celebrate holidays. Many parents will sacrifice their own needs for the happiness of their children as children are taught that Eid is celebrated with new clothes and gifts. Many parents will even have to bear the burden of disappointing their children as even if they give up their own celebration still they will not be able to fulfil the demands of their children. With low incomes and rising prices, it is becoming burdensome to live a life with the fulfilment of basic needs, to go above and beyond that is tough.

In such difficult times, people must not only focus on the celebrations but also on the idea and spirit of this celebration. Brotherhood is a basic tenet of Islam and so is helping the needy and destitute.
