Sultans keep win streak going after beating Gladiators in last-over thriller

Defending champions Multan Sultans defeated Quetta Gladiators by 6 runs in the seventh match of HBL PSL 7 at National Stadium Karachi for the third consecutive victory in the tournament. In the pursuit of 175 runs, the entire team of Quetta Gladiators was dismissed with one ball remaining.

David Willey successfully defended 8 runs in the last over as well as guided three players to the pavilion and played an important role in the match. Shaun Masood played an excellent inning of 88 runs.

When Quetta Gladiators started chasing the target, both openers Ehsan Ali (24) and Will Smith (3) returned to the pavilion with 29 runs on the board. Both of them were dismissed by Khushdal Shah.

Batting responsibly with captain Sarfraz Ahmed, Ben Duckett fought hard by setting up a partnership of 68 runs.

Hopes were dashed when three more players were dismissed in a row. Captain Sarfraz Ahmed (21), Asher Qureshi (0), and Muhammad Nawaz scored one run before going back to the pavilion.

This was the time when Quetta Gladiators needed 50 runs in the last four overs to win. Iftikhar Ahmed tried to turn the tide of the match by hitting two sixes and two fours in one over of Imran Sr but he too got out after scoring 30 runs off 13 balls. James Faulkner and Sohail Tanveer also failed to lead their team to victory and were dismissed for 18 and 13 runs respectively. Khushdal Shah and David Willey took three wickets each.

Earlier, Multan Sultans batted first at the invitation of Quetta Gladiators and scored 174 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs thanks to Shan Masood’s half-century.

Shan Masood played an innings of 88 runs off 58 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes. This was his second consecutive half-century in the event. In the closing overs, Tim David played an unbeaten inning of 28 runs with the help of one-four and two sixes.

Earlier, Sohaib Maqsood and Rilee Rossouw were dismissed for a combined score of 42.

Quetta Gladiators’ Mohammad Hasnain took two wickets and James Faulkner took one.
