Supreme Court grants bail to MNA Ali Wazir

Judge says rules were not followed in proceedings of Wazir’s case

The Supreme Court granted bail to Member of National Assembly Ali Wazir on Tuesday, a year after his arrest from Peshawar last year.

MNA Ali Wazir was arrested in December last year following accusations of ‘criminal conspiracy’ and ‘making derogatory comments about state institutions’. The alleged comments had been made in a protest gathering in Karachi, and a case was registered against the lawmaker and other leaders of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), of which the Wazir is a part.

Other leaders of PTM were also accused of offenses of a nature similar to those that MNA Wazir was accused of.

Wazir was shifted to Karachi from Peshawar after the arrest.

The decision granting the bail was given by Justice Tariq Masood, and the bench included two more judges. The court said that all of the other accused had been released but Wazir was still in prison and that rules had not been followed in his case.

National Democratic Movement leader and MNA Mohsin Dawar congratulated Wazir on social media and tweeted that the lawmaker remained in prison for a year and that he was glad that Ali would be out on bail.

The PTM had protested numerous times for the release of Ali Wazir.
