Supreme Court’s unwise judgement will harm stability, Sanaullah

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that if the Supreme Court does not make a wise judgment regarding the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) request to postpone elections in Punjab, the economic and political stability of the country would be harmed.

The minister continued in a series of tweets that a bad ruling from the supreme court will spark rioting, mayhem, and anarchy all throughout the nation.

He asserted that there were several perspectives on the election and that the Parliament had the power to direct the executive branch and other organizations. Sanaullah also stated that the current administration wished to follow the Constitution.

According to the interior minister, the administration started the procedure after receiving instructions from the Supreme Court, and the electoral watchdog provided the election date. He insisted that the administration “could not even think” of overturning the rulings of the apex court.

After the provincial elections, “There will not be a level playing field in the National Assembly elections with the presence of the ruling government,” and there would be concerns about the conduct of free and transparent elections, , PML-N leader further said.

The interior minister also said that it would be preferable for the nation if all of the assembly’ elections were held simultaneously, in a transparent and fair manner, and in the presence of interim administrations.

In the aftermath of the ECP’s unexpected about-face to move the Punjab polls from their initial April 30 date to October 8, all eyes are on Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial.

CJP Bandial had already claimed suo motu power to hold general elections of both provincial assemblies within 90 days. CJP Bandial has also made it plain that the Supreme Court will intervene in the event the polls were postponed.
