‘Surprise’: Governor Punjab sacked

The information minister did not offer any explanation for the move but said that the deputy speaker will be the acting governor

On the historic day on which voting is set to take place on the no-confidence motion tabled against Prime Minister Imran Khan, the government has removed Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar from the post of Punjab Governor.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Sunday tweeted that the federal government had removed Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar from his post.

The decision has come just hours before the National Assembly session was set to start along with the session of the Punjab Assembly, in which the house will elect the new Chief Minister after Buzdar’s resignation.

The Information Minister did not offer any explanation for the move but said that the deputy speaker will be the acting governor and the government will later announce the replacement for this seat.

Chaudhary Sarwar is a former member of the British parliament. He abandoned his political career to serve in Pakistan in 2013.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s disgruntled Jahangir Khan Tareen group said that it will back the joint Opposition’s candidate, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Hamza Shahbaz for Punjab’s Chief Minister slot, senior PML-N leader Ishaq Dar said.

This comes after a meeting between former finance minister Ishaq Dar and PTI’s ex-secretary general Jahangir Tareen in a London hotel. According to a local news outlet, the two leaders talked regarding the upcoming no-confidence vote on Sunday and the Punjab CM election.

Speaking to the media, Hamza Shehbaz said the government is exposing itself and that nothing will happen after sacking the governor. This was not a democratic move. We will vote according to the constitution, we have a majority in the house. In another development, a senior journalist Hamid Mir tweeted that he spoke to Chauhdry Sarwar who disclosed that the PM office was forcing him to do unconstitutional things to which he apparently refused.

“He said Fed Govt wanted me to delay today’s session of the Punjab Assembly when he resisted they sacked him on the demand of Ch Pervez Elahi,” said the tweet.
