Taliban commit to safety of Chinese nationals

The Taliban has pledged to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in Afghanistan, three weeks after ISIS assault on a Kabul hotel that hosts Chinese businesspeople.

Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen stated that the regime had an obligation to maintain the safety of Chinese nationals.

Shaheen further said, “The current government reiterates its obligation to maintain the safety of Chinese nationals and all other nationals who are coming to Afghanistan either for investment, business or tourism.”

He further added that the majority of Chinese individuals in Afghanistan were there on business and safeguarding them was the government’s duty to fulfil.

On December 13, gunmen opened fire at the Kabul Longan Hotel, leaving five Chinese nationals with life-threatening injuries.

The attack was claimed by the Isis affiliate in Afghanistan, Islamic State Khorasan (Isis-K).

According to the Midstone Centre for International Affairs (MCIA), Isis-K had been referred to as the most major obstacle to the Taliban’s quest for international legitimacy and the most serious operational challenge to their authority in Afghanistan.
