Qaumi Awami Tehreek (QAT) President Ayaz Latif Palijo has asked the youths of Tharparkar district to play a proactive role while keeping in mind the transforming situation of the desert.
Palijo said this while addressing a conference organised by Nojawan Ittehad Tharparkar in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Cultural Complex in Mithi on Sunday.
He added that it was the prime responsibility of the educated and enlightened youths of the region to play their role and create awareness among the people, so that they could be kept informed and get them acclimatised with the situations emerging in the wake of the transformation due to massive corporate activities.
He said that the corporate sector, which has stepped in to utilise the resources of Thaparkar, should be sensitised towards the chronic issues of the desert, so that they could be addressed properly. He added that Thar had always been kept backwards, and successive rulers had never bothered to provide the basic amenities of life.
“The enlightened youths, who have always played a significant role in building and shaping any society, should take an extra step in this situation to bring the real change in the lifestyle of Tharis,” he said. Palijo lashed out at lawmakers from Thar for doing nothing for the people of the district, adding that he held them responsible for the mess and unending suffering of the people.
Palijo said that those who have a say in the routine matters had not been playing their due role and letting the executives of the mining firms impose their decisions on the local people. He made it clear that change did not mean a few development schemes at the cost of massive displacement of the local people, but he believed that real change meant a change in the lifestyle of the people of Thar.
He said that rampant cases of suicides were the glaring example of unemployment and other chronic issues in Thar which needed special attention from the rulers.
Palijo implored the rulers to step in to save the lives of Tharis with long-term plans and policies. He alleged that the resources of Sindh were being mercilessly exploited, depriving the people of their basic rights.
The QAT chief said that the PPP government, which was condemning the federal government for a steep rise in prices of everyday items and inflation, was not serious in resolving the basic issues of the people of the province. He said that every department in Sindh had been in ruins and people were forced to live in subhuman conditions.
