Two dead after rain and floods in Jeddah

In Videos viral on social media, water can be seen entering homes and sinking vehicles

At least two people have died while schools have been closed and flights have been suspended due to heavy rains in western areas of Saudi Arabia including the coastal city of Jeddah.

“Two deaths have been recorded so far and we call on all people not to step out of their homes until they are absolutely needed,” the Makkah Regional Government said on its Twitter page.

The road connecting the two cities is used by pilgrims to reach Mala. The road was closed due to rain but it was later opened after the rain stopped.

Footage from the state-run Al-Akhbariya channel showed worshippers praying at the Masjid al-Haram even during heavy rains. Videos of the situation are going viral on social media in which water can be seen entering homes and vehicles can be seen sinking.

Departures of some flights had been postponed due to weather conditions Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport and the passengers were advised to keep in touch for flight schedules.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that schools in Jeddah have been temporarily closed due to rain.

Schools have also been closed in Rabeekh and Khalees in view of the safety of students which has worried both parents and children because examinations were going on in schools and a day earlier schools were closed due to the announcement of a public holiday due to Saudi Arabia’s Victory in the FIFA World Cup match against Argentina.
