Leeds: United Kashmir People’s National Party’s Chairman Sardar Shaukat Ali Kashmiri has urged Kashmiri women living in the UK to take part in politics and broaden their understanding of British politics and society.
Addressing a gathering in Leeds on Tuesday Kashmiri said that Kashmiri women were deprived of political freedoms in Pakistan and Pakistan’s administered Kashmir, adding such deprivation is the result of tribal mentality, casteism, religious elements and male chauvinism.
“But such elements are not strong in the British society which is known for its rule of law principle. Therefore, Kashmiri women should take advantage of political freedoms that are available here joining the parties of their choice.”
Kashmiri appealed to women to not only join political parties but also try to contest local and general elections. “You cannot change any society without taking part in politics. If you want to influence the policies of British government then it cannot happen without participation in politics.”
The UKPNP chairman underscored the need for learning British culture and values. “The rise of far right is threatening the entire British society. The mentality of segregation on the part of Kashmiri and other immigrant people would only fuel the propaganda of racist elements.”
Therefore, it is important, Kashmir noted that immigrants contribute to the British society in an effective way. “And women can play an important role in enhancing this cultural understanding. They should not only understand the British culture but should also teach it to their children.”
Those who are seeking hegemony in the name of religion are the biggest enemy of immigrants. “Only the policies of co-existence and respect for British values would benefit immigrants besides creating an environment for those who have adopted the UK as their country.”
