A helicopter crash outside of Kyiv claimed the lives of 18, including the interior minister of Ukraine, other senior ministry officials, and three children.

According to the regional governor, the helicopter crashed down in a residential neighbourhood in Brovary, in the northeastern suburbs of the capital, injuring 29 including 15 children.

According to media reports, in a courtyard close to the wrecked nursery, several dead bodies were lying on foil blankets.

National police Chief Ihor Klymenko said, “Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi had been killed alongside his first deputy, Yevheniy Yenin, and other officials in a helicopter belonging to the state emergency service.”

However, officials had not explained the reason for the helicopter accident. Russia, whose forces invaded Ukraine in February of last year, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At the time, local Ukrainian officials also did not make any mention of any Russian attacks in the region.
