Essentially a remnant from the monarchical times, Wedderburn Castle is an 18th century house standing on the fringes of Scotland, now catering to modern-day affluent families which wish to hold their lavish parties in breathtakingly beautiful mansions, in a way recalling and reliving the daintiness of old times.
It was in this very castle that a Pakistani drama serial was also shot, with the castle itself playing an essential character and making it to the title of the serial as well, which was called ‘The Castle: Aik Umeed’, released in 2001. Written by Haseena Moin and directed and produced by the husband-wife duo of Zulfikar Sheikh and Tasmina Sheikh, ‘The Castle: Aik Umeed’ was shot partially in Pakistan and partially in Scotland in the mentioned castle. The storyline revolved around an old-aged man who, after having lost his wife and son, invited his relatives from Pakistan. The relatives looked forward to the huge mansion and its hidden treasures as a way to get rid of their poverty-stricken lives in Pakistan, only to later on realize that human emotions take lead in the competition between materialism and humanity.
‘The Castle: Aik Umeed’ had some of the finest actors of Pakistan including Shagufta Ejaz, Samina Ahmed, Humayun Saeed, Nayyer Ejaz, Talat Hussain, Yousaf Shakeel and many others, and is still remembered to date for being one of the biggest productions of Pakistan Television.
With its unique storyline touching upon the deepest of human emotions and also emerging as appealing to everyone with the addition of a few horror scenes as well, ‘The Castle’ was appreciated by all age-groups in the early 2000s.
