UN calls for a thorough investigation of Arshad Sharif’s death

The United Nations has called for a thorough investigation of the circumstances of journalist Arshad Sharif’s death.

Kenyan police shot Arshad Sharif on Sunday, October 23 which they later termed as a case of ‘mistaken identity’. The incident happened on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital Nairobi.

The statement of police said that the vehicle had tried to drive through the roadblock despite firing from officers. Outrage was sparked in Pakistan over the incident and demands for an investigation were made.

Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson of the United Nations Secretary-General said that he saw the tragic reports about the incident. Stephane was asked the question during the regular briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

Stephane also said that he hopes that the circumstances under which the journalist was killed will be investigated by Kenyan authorities.

US State Department had also urged the Kenyan authorities for a full investigation of Arshad Sharif’s death. Ned Price State Department’s Spokesperson had called for a probe into the matter.

The spokesperson had said, “We encourage a full investigation by the Government of Kenya into his death. It’s not entirely clear that we know all the circumstances at this point regarding what led to his death, but we urge for a full investigation.”
