Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres has announced that he would visit Pakistan on September 9 for solidarity with the flood-hit country.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson of the UN secretary general, has stated that the UN chief would pay a solidarity visit to flood-hit Pakistan. He also said that the UN Secretary General would travel to areas impacted by the historic floods.

According to media reports, the secretary general will also meet with displaced families and will review the status of humanitarian assistance of global institutions.

Foreign Office’s Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, while welcoming the visit, has said that it will contribute in a big way to the collective effort to highlight the impact of this disaster.

On August 30, the UN had issued a flash appeal of $160 million to help Pakistan. Guterres had said that the people of Pakistan were facing a “monsoon on steroids” and that the country was awash in suffering.

He had further said that millions of people have been forced from their homes and schools whereas the health facilities also have been shattered by the climate catastrophe. He had appealed for a speedy response to Pakistan’s request for help. He said, “Let us all step up in solidarity and support the people of Pakistan in their hour of need.”
