A recent study conducted at West Virginia University has uncovered that electronic cigarettes commonly known as vapes may have a higher potential for addiction compared to nicotine gum.
The findings suggest that vaping delivers a more compelling addictive effect especially among young adults.
The research highlights that individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 showed a strong preference for vaping over nicotine gum indicating that this preference may play a significant role in the habit forming nature of e-cigarettes.
Originally electronic cigarettes were introduced as a safer alternative to traditional smoking aimed at helping people quit and avoid the severe health risks associated with tobacco such as cancer.
However over time e-cigarettes have gained popularity even among those who had never smoked before giving rise to a new form of nicotine dependency.
The study Involved 16 participants within the target age group all of whom were either former smokers or had recently quit smoking.
Participants were kept off nicotine overnight and were then randomly assigned to either use a vape or chew nicotine gum for 30 minutes the following morning.
After the session researchers assessed their emotional responses cravings for nicotine and levels of mental satisfaction.
Results showed that participants who used vapes experienced significantly lower cravings and withdrawal symptoms compared to those who used nicotine gum.
They also reported feeling more mentally relaxed and satisfied.
Modern e-cigarettes according to the study are particularly effective at delivering nicotine in a way that appeals to new users especially those with no prior exposure to traditional tobacco products.
This makes them especially potent in initiating and sustaining addiction.
In response to the growing concerns around youth vaping the UK government has announced plans to ban disposable vapes and limit flavor options in an effort to make them less attractive to younger populations.
The study further explained that vaping becomes more addictive than nicotine gum because the form of nicotine used in e-cigarettes is smoother and less bitter making the experience more enjoyable and encouraging continued use.
