Washington cannot keep ignoring revolt over Israel

More than 100 Democratic lawmakers just told their own leadership something Washington has tried hard not to hear. The vote to reduce military aid to Israel failed, but the numbers behind it matter more than the outcome itself. This was not a fringe protest. Nancy Pelosi voted for it. Katherine Clark voted for it. When a former Speaker and a sitting Whip break ranks on Israel policy, the old consensus is clearly cracking.

For decades, unconditional support for Israel was treated as untouchable in American politics. That era is ending, and the reasons are not hard to understand. Years of war in Gaza, rising civilian killings and a government in Israel that many see as indifferent to Palestinian suffering have pushed even loyal allies to reconsider. Polling confirms this is not just a Washington phenomenon. Most Democratic voters, especially younger ones, now want limits on military aid. Politicians ignore that shift at their own risk.

Progressive candidates who campaign openly against unconditional aid are winning primaries in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Colorado. In Michigan, a Senate candidate has built his campaign around this very issue. These are not isolated results. They are early signs of where the party is heading.

The United States must take this moment seriously instead of treating it as a temporary embarrassment. Continuing to send unrestricted military support while ignoring mounting human costs in Gaza is no longer sustainable, politically or morally. American foreign policy should reflect accountability, not automatic loyalty regardless of consequences.

Pro-Israel groups have admitted the vote sends a message. They are right, but the message is not only for Israel. It is for Washington too. Leaders on both sides of the aisle need to listen to what a growing number of Americans, and a growing number of their own lawmakers, are now saying clearly. Blind support without conditions is no longer good policy.
