World is facing worst water crisis, UN report

United Nations has released a report on World Water day warning that due to climate change, population growth, and changes in farming practices, billions of people will face the most severe water shortages in the coming decades.

The report said that historically, the rate of water use increased by one percent every year and in 2050 people worldwide will be using 25 percent more water than today.

According to the report, water scarcity was increasing due to excessive use and pollution as well as rising global temperatures.

“In 2016, more than 930 million people were facing water shortages, which will reach 2.4 billion by 2050,” the report said.

India will be the most affected country in the world in terms of water scarcity, the report revealed.

The report further said that the urban population will face more difficulties due to water scarcity than the villages.

Experts who compiled the report said that the demand for water at the urban level is expected to increase by 80 percent by 2050 and the number of the urban population facing water shortage will double in this period.

According to experts, due to the increase in the global population, the demand for agricultural products will also increase.

It added that nearly one-third of the world’s cities depend on surface water and will face difficulties due to increased agricultural demand.
