Alarming spread of Polio Virus confirmed in sewage samples from 3 cities

The National Polio Laboratory has confirmed the presence of the polio virus in sewage samples from Hyderabad, Chaman, and Pishin, indicating a troubling spread of the virus linked genetically to Quetta.

This year’s testing has revealed polio contamination in the sewage of 38 districts, with a significant surge expected as the summer progresses.

Sampling conducted on May 6 and 7 detected polio in the sewage of Hyderabad’s Qadir pumping station. Notably, seven sewage samples from Hyderabad have tested positive for polio this year, all genetically related to the strain found in Quetta. In Chaman, the Hadi Pak Environmental Site’s sewage has tested positive for polio in ten samples, suggesting local transmission. Similarly, four sewage samples from Pishin’s Tarwa area have confirmed the presence of the virus, also linked genetically to Quetta.

According to media sources, the number of polio-positive sewage samples in 2024 has reached a concerning 140, a significant increase from the 126 positive samples recorded across 28 districts last year. This rapid rise underscores the escalating threat of polio, particularly as warmer weather may further accelerate the virus’s spread, potentially pushing the number of positive samples beyond 200.

The situation highlights the urgent need for intensified polio eradication efforts. With three confirmed polio cases in the country this year, health authorities are facing a critical challenge in controlling the outbreak. The genetic link to Quetta emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions in areas with detected virus strains to prevent further transmission.
