ANP seeks truth commission on military involvement in politics

Awami National Party (ANP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Aimal Wali Khan has urged Lt. Gen. Asim Munir, who has been nominated to be the new Chief of Army Staff, to establish a truth commission on “military meddling” in politics.

The Awami National Party leader wrote an open letter to Gen. Munir pointing out that the military had decided in February not to get involved in any political issues, which was a welcome move from the departing Chief of Army Staff, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Who would make up for the military’s prior meddling in domestic affairs, he questioned. Aimal maintained that some political groups had been “manufactured” while others had had their roles reduced.

“The army’s open meddling in politics is acknowledged in the army chief’s address.” To tell the public which political party was manipulated and which national party was transformed into a regional one, a truth commission must now be established, he stated.

The proposed commission, according to the ANP leader, should look into instances of people’s mandates being stolen and instances of political parties being strengthened or weakened between 1947 and 2022.

He added that the military leadership should stop using the word “neutrality” and that everyone should uphold the Constitution.
