The federal government has decided to revise the constitutional provision governing the appointment of judges to the superior judiciary, with a particular emphasis on modifying the composition of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) as stipulated in the 18th Constitutional Amendment.

During a recent meeting of the JCP presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, discussions centered around potential alterations to the commission’s structure.

Sources indicate that various stakeholders, including senior judges and representatives from bar councils, shared their perspectives on postponing deliberations regarding proposed amendments until the government provides further clarity.

Moreover, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar hinted at forthcoming constitutional changes aimed at reforming the judge selection process, with a focus on achieving a more balanced approach.

He stressed the importance of collaboration between the judiciary and administration in the appointment process, underscoring Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directive to pursue constitutional amendments in this domain.

Tarar’s remarks suggest a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability in the judiciary’s functioning.
