Arooj Aftab becomes first Pakistani to bag Grammy

Artist becomes first Pakistani to get this award

Arooj Aftab, a Brooklyn-based Pakistani singer, gets another feather in her cap by winning her first Grammy on Sunday. She was nominated in two categories that included Best Global Performance and Best New Artist.

Arooj won the award for her song ‘Mohabbat’ in the category of Best Global Performance. The 37-years-old vocalist became the first Pakistani to get this award. While giving her speech, she said that she almost fainted after hearing her name.

The artist thanked all the musicians and her co-workers who worked as a strong team to make her successful.

Soon after winning the award, social media was filled with congratulatory messages for the artists and people applauding her for taking Pakistan to global recognition.

Arooj has performed at a number of major New York venues including Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art, also opening for Mitski at The Brooklyn Steel in 2018.
