BHC bins plea for Article 6 proceedings against Imran Khan

A two-member bench of the Balochistan High Court (BHC), comprising Chief Justice Hashim Kakar and Justice Shaukat Rakhshani, recently reviewed a significant legal plea. This plea, which sought serious legal actions against the former Prime Minister Imran Khan, was ultimately dismissed by the court due to jurisdictional issues.

The plea was brought forward by Abdul Razzaq Shar, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court. Shar argued that Imran Khan had violated the Constitution by advising the president to dissolve the National Assembly, an action he believed warranted a trial under Article 6, which addresses acts of high treason.

During the initial hearing last year, the BHC bench issued notices to the additional attorney general and the deputy attorney general, requesting their responses to the plea. These notices marked the beginning of the legal process, which attracted considerable attention due to the serious nature of the accusations.

Since his impeachment as prime minister, Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has faced multiple legal challenges. He is currently serving a jail term following convictions in several cases, including the cipher case, the Toshakhana case, and an ‘illegal’ marriage case. These legal troubles have compounded Khan’s political and personal difficulties, as he continues to navigate a complex legal landscape.
