Bilawal Bhutto Zardari call for judicial reforms and democratic principles

In his address at a public gathering commemorating the 45th martyrdom anniversary of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), underscored the urgent need for judicial reforms, considering them a vital yet unresolved aspect of the charter of democracy (CoD). He assured the party’s dedication to engaging with stakeholders, including civil society, in thorough consultations on this issue. Bilawal, while honoring the enduring legacy of martyrs like Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, emphasized their continued influence, stating, “Martyrs remain alive; Zulfikar Ali Bhutto lives on.”

He praised Bhutto’s significant contributions to the nation, highlighting his instrumental role in formulating the country’s constitution, empowering citizens with voting rights, facilitating land ownership for farmers, advocating for labor rights, and advancing Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities. Affirming the PPP’s steadfast adherence to the ideology and principles of its founding chairman, Bilawal also acknowledged the party’s contemporary achievements, including governance in two provinces and the chairmanship of the Senate.

Furthermore, he celebrated President Asif Ali Zardari’s historic re-election, marking a milestone in the nation’s political landscape. Bilawal welcomed the Supreme Court’s acknowledgment, after 12 years, of the injustice inflicted upon Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, emphasizing his denial of the basic right to a fair trial. He hailed this verdict as a victory for party supporters and democracy advocates nationwide.

Bilawal warned against persistent threats to democracy, with some politicians driven by personal agendas willing to endanger national interests. Stressing responsible political conduct, he urged politicians to stay within their mandate’s confines, criticizing disruptive tactics like sit-ins and advocating for constructive engagement and dialogue.

Reflecting on President Asif Ali Zardari’s previous tenure, Bilawal noted the successful implementation of 90 percent of the charter of democracy but highlighted the remaining crucial 10 percent: the agenda of judicial reforms. He pledged to expedite these reforms, emphasizing the importance of timely justice for all citizens, referencing the prolonged wait endured by leaders of the people.
