Century old tram in Turkey goes electric with vintage design

Istanbul: A century-old tram in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul has been transformed into a modern tram while retaining its classic look.

The red and white tram service which began a hundred years ago is not only popular among locals but also attracts tourists visiting the city. Operating on Istanbul’s European side, this tram runs along the city’s most famous commercial street, Istiklal Avenue covering approximately 1.5 kilometers.

The tram service officially began 110 years ago in 1914. To preserve its original appearance, continuous maintenance is carried out. Now, alongside the old tram, a new battery-powered tram that closely resembles the vintage one will be in service. The new tram features a wooden floor and movable seats maintaining the nostalgic feel.

According to foreign media reports, the old tram had glass windows on both sides for rearview. In the new tram, cameras have been installed on both sides for the driver offering an easier and broader view. Additionally, the driver no longer needs to stand while operating the tram.

Istanbul resident Gonul Murtekin who rode the new battery-powered tram with his grandson praised the modernization efforts. He appreciated that the administration maintained the resemblance to the old tram keeping the nostalgic aspects intact.

The Istanbul mayor’s office announced plans to gradually retire the old trams and place them in a transportation museum which is currently in the planning stages. For now, the new streetcar will operate alongside the vintage tram.
