Chat transfer and 32-person video calls now available on WhatsApp

WhatsApp improved its video calling features, allowing users to watch videos together during calls. This builds on the screen-sharing feature introduced in August. WhatsApp also increased the maximum number of video call participants to 32 across all devices. previously, the limit was 8 for Windows and macOS users and 32 for mobile users.

This matches Apple FaceTime’s capacity. A new speaker spotlight feature highlights the person speaking in a video call. Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, released the Meta Low Bitrate (MLow) codec to improve call reliability, especially on older devices or low-network conditions. MLow offers twice the audio quality with 10% less computing complexity than the previous codec.

WhatsApp introduces new feature for voice call users

This codec is already used on Instagram and Messenger calls and is now available on WhatsApp. These updates will be available to all eligible users in the coming weeks. WhatsApp is also working on a feature to transfer chat history between devices without relying on Google Drive backups.

This feature was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.13.6 release. Currently, WhatsApp allows users to migrate chat histories between iOS and Android devices through a specific part of the app, but with limitations for earlier Android versions. The new feature promises a smoother and more user-friendly experience for consumers, regardless of device operating system.
